Islamabad, June 28, 2025 —
The Government of Pakistan has officially declared a Red Alert as a record-breaking heatwave continues to impact much of the country. Temperatures have soared above 48°C, with authorities warning the public to take urgent safety measures.
Emergency Measures Across the Country
Provincial governments in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan have announced the closure of all schools and colleges until further notice. Emergency cooling centers have been established in major cities including Lahore, Karachi, and Multan.
In a press briefing today, officials confirmed that water tankers and medical units have been deployed in heat-affected zones, especially in under-resourced areas.
Health Concerns on the Rise
Hospitals across the country are witnessing a sharp rise in heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion cases. Health experts are advising the public to:
- Stay indoors during peak heat hours (12 PM to 4 PM)
- Drink plenty of water regularly
- Avoid physical exertion outdoors
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing
Dr. Fawad Khan from Jinnah Hospital, Karachi stated:
“The risk of fatal heatstroke is extremely high. We urge citizens to take this seriously.”
City Temperature Reports
- Jacobabad: 49.3°C
- Lahore: 46.5°C
- Karachi: 44.8°C
- Multan: 47.2°C
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the extreme heat could continue into early next week, urging vulnerable populations — especially children and the elderly — to remain indoors.
Climate Experts Raise Alarm
Environmental researchers are linking this severe heatwave to climate change. Pakistan is already among the top 10 countries most vulnerable to extreme weather due to global warming.
